Винсент растерянно подошел к креслу, одиноко стоявшему на антресолях, опустился в него и протер глаза. С двенадцати лет он знал только одну живопись - темную и мрачноватую, где мазок был незаметен, где все детали на полотне были выписаны правильно и законченно, где ровные тонкие слои красок постепенно переходили один в другой.

Та живопись, которая теперь весело смеялась над ним со стены, не имела ничего общего с картинами, виденными им до сих пор. Исчезли ровные и тонкие красочные слои. Исчезла сентиментальность и невозмутимая степенность. Исчезла коричневая подливка, в которой плавала живопись Европы не одно столетие. Здесь были картины, напоенные буйным, неистовым солнцем. Всюду здесь трепетал и пульсировал свет и воздух.
